Lower Blepharoplasty Overview

Normally we all have fat that sits underneath our eyes and cushions our eye from any vibrations when we walk or run. This fat normally sits behind our cheek and gives us a smooth contour in between the lower eyelid and the cheek but as we all age this fat can move forward and herniate or pseudo herniate – fat becomes a little bulge and that prominence can be visible this bulge can cause a convexity and a concavity or depression below. It that can cause the appearance of under-eye bags and make you appear older than you really are. Lower blepharoplasty surgery rejuvenates the lower lid’s appearance.

The way Dr. Yoo prefers to perform lower blepharoplasty is through an incision that’s hidden on the inside of your eyelid so there’s no scar on the outside that you can see. Through an incision on the inside of the eye along the conjunctiva or the pink part of the eye where it’s not visible to the outside, an incision can be made and through this incision, the fat along the lower eyelid is repositioned to an area where it’s hollow. When it’s moved from an area where it’s prominent to the area and the tear trough or the area below the eyelid that’s depressed, it can create a much smoother transition and create a smooth lid cheek contour. This fat repositioning allows for a more smooth transition from the lower eyelids to the upper cheeks while preserving the volume.

Anesthesia

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.

Lower Eyelid Recovery

Immediately after the surgery, you will have a small bolster or a little stitch holding the fat repositioned into the tear trough and you'll have a little stitch in the corner of your eye that will stay in place for a week. Makeup can be worn and even around the eyes to cover any residual bruising or swelling. Most patients will feel that it takes about 2 weeks for most of the bruising and swelling to resolve and return to their former appearance minus the eye bags.

A lower blepharoplasty can be combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty or facelift. This will enable the patient to have a single recovery period.
